Animated Life: The Living Fossil Fish

Marjorie Courtenay Latimer and the 1938 coelacanth
Op-Docs' last “Animated Life” video for 2015 celebrates the unique, strange coelacanth: an awesome survivor and one of the biggest natural history surprises of the 20th century.

This video is the fifth in the Op-Docs series “Animated Life,” a collaboration between Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s BioInteractive and The New York Times, which uses paper puppets to explore pivotal moments of discovery, and to celebrate the visionaries who have driven us to see the world in new ways. Other Op-Docs in the series include “The Animated Life of A.R. Wallace,” “Seeing the Invisible,” “Pangea” and “Mary Leakey.”
